The world is changing.

Stuck.

Needing change, and not sure where or how to start?

Unhappy.

Is your mind pushing you around? Does it keep coming up with ways to “solve” your pain or problems, only to find yourself right back down in the hole?

Anxious.

Does life feel busy, empty, unsatisfying?

Unfulfilled.

Maybe you know what you want, but never seem to get there.

Suffering.

Are you having trouble living the life you want?

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Evidence based therapy, consultation, and training

Working together with you from a new and innovative, research-backed approach, I can help with a range of challenging life issues: anxiety or depression, experiences of trauma, grief, or loss, struggles with relationships, family or professional problems. And therapy can be as much about living a more mindful and joyful life as it is about dealing with problems. We can also collaborate to help you create more happiness in your life, to get to know yourself better, or to work on your personal or professional growth.

About Shawn

Often, people’s bios include information about training, experience, and credentials, which, in fact, you will find below. Because that may be important as you make your decisions about finding the right person to work with. I also believe it is equally important to get to know the human being beyond the degrees and schools in order to consider the best fit for you.

Academics & Stuff

I am a clinical psychologist in private practice in Towson, Maryland and in the Outpatient Trauma Recovery Program at the VA Maryland Health Care System in Baltimore. I teach ACT and contextual behavioral science as adjunct faculty for the graduate psychology program at Loyola University Maryland, where I earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2004. I completed internship and post-doctoral training at the Baltimore VA under the mentorship of Sonja Batten, Ph.D. I served as the founding President of MPAGS, the graduate student arm of the Maryland Psychological Association, and as a Task Force member and student liaison to the Association’s Board.

In addition to helping private practice clients develop more meaningful and fulfilling lives, and providing consultation and training to colleagues and students in mental health and related disciplines, I’ve recently started working with local schools to introduce principles of ACT and contextual behavioral science to students and faculty, and am developing several ACT-based programs geared toward sports performance, health, and exercise goals for a nationally recognized fitness club. I’m currently serving as President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavior Science.
